10. Ginkgo Biloba

Cognitive enhancement & Alzheimer's protection
Gingkgo biloba use dates back centuries - with Chinese traditional medicine using the plant for quite literally thousands of years before the West caught wind of its powerful cognitive benefits.
It's a "Nootropic" - which is a class of supplements that have cognitive & memory enhancing properties.
Your 40s are a key time to be caring for your brain. It's no secret that Alzheimer's disease is growing in frequency - with it being among the top 10 leading causes of death in western society.
And I don't know about you, but Alzheimer's scares the absolute $hit out of me!
The disease is incredibly difficult to treat once you have it, so prevention is the key - and your 40s are the prime time to start taking preventive measures.
This is where Ginkgo Biloba comes in...
Studies in the last few years have shown that Ginkgo biloba has promising results in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
According to the studies, compounds in the plant could play a major role in preventing "oxidative & peroxidative" brain stress - which are major contributors to the progression of Alzheimer's.
Focus & memory
Ginkgo biloba not only aids in preventing brain disease - but also has cognitive enhancing effects - which are what it's mostly known and used for.
Consistent use can result in some serious improvements to focus and memory.
In a nutshell, many of these brain boosting benefits are because the plant can boost blood circulation - specifically, blood circulation to the brain.
Extract vs plant powder
There are two types of herbal supplements - extracts & plant powders.
Plant powders are just what the name suggests - powdered plants. Whereas extracts are a bit more complicated.
Extracts are essentially more concentrated versions of the plant powders - where a certain chemical compound is known to provide the benefits of the plant - this is the "active ingredient".
You'll be able to tell, because all supplements legally have to state whether they are an extract, what active ingredient the product is "standardized" to, and what % of the ingredient is present.
Take this Ginkgo biloba supplement as an example:

You can see it states "Ginkgo Extract", and tells you exactly what compounds it's been standardized to, and what % of them are in each daily serving.
It's worth noting that there is no "better" option. Some ingredients are better as powdered plants, and some are better as extracts.
It all depends on how much clinical research has been done on the plant, and its desired effects.
If researchers know that a specific compound is responsible for the benefits - it makes sense to standardize extracts for it. If they don't know what exactly makes it work, a plant powder may be better.
See, plant powders have the benefit of having every active compound in the plant still in the product. Meaning other potential health benefits haven't been washed away in the extraction process.
But this is very subjective, and personal to each plant & its respective benefits.
In short, it's worth knowing - but not worth picking one over the other.
If most products are sold as extracts, it's because that's what has been shown to work over time.
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Memory enhancement
- Sharper focus
- Potentially help ward off Alzheimer's
What are Ginkgo's active ingredients?
The two most common active ingredients and dosages are:
- Flavone Glycosides (22-27%)
- Terpene Lactones (5-7%)
How much to take?
The standard dose of Ginkgo is between 40mg - 240mg.
This depends on the use case. For Alzheimer's protection, doses are lower (say 40mg) taken 3 times daily. For cognitive enhancement, larger doses are taken once per day (say 240mg).
Read the label and use as directed.
Where to purchase?
Thankfully, Ginkgo is a relatively common supplement nowadays. So you may be able to find it at any of these places:
- Your local grocery store (Walmart, Costco, etc)
- Amazon
- Pharmacies/medical outlets
- Health food retailers
9. Cocoa/Cacao

Cocoa - not chocolate
Yes, cocoa - no, I'm not joking...
Cocoa gets a bad rap, being associated with the delicious goodness we know as chocolate. But that reputation is undeserved, because cocoa is actually really good for you - like really good...
Cocoa refers to the roasted version of cacao. The words get mixed up often, but they're essentially the same thing. Cocoa - roasted. Cacao - fresh (like the picture above).
For the sake of simplicity, I'll be referring to it as cocoa.
Brain protection & circulation booster
See, cocoa is actually packed with beneficial compounds - most notably "flavanoids."
Flavanoid rich cocoa has the potential to boost blood flow, reduce blood pressure, enhance cognitive function, boost mood - and even provide protection against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
(See how much I hate Alzheimer's)
The only reason chocolate is bad for you is because of all of the sugar and extra flavor agents added to it. Making it a fastlane to weight gain.
This is why you've probably heard that dark chocolate (75% plus cocoa) is actually good for you - which is 100% true.
These benefits are why it's on the list. For men over 40, your blood flow and brain health should be key areas to target. Since they most commonly start to decline from your 40s onward.
So next time you're browsing the chocolate aisle, forget the Hershey's - and pick up some dark chocolate instead.
Another option is to buy some cocoa powder, and start incorporating it into your drinks -
I don't mean drinking cocoa - important difference here. I mean 100% pure cocoa powder. As your drinking cocoas are generally packed with sugar, binding agents, and other unnecessary cr@p.
Try adding cocoa to your coffee. Mocha anyone?
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Improved blood circulation
- Reduce blood pressure
- Improve mood
- Potentially help prevent Alzheimer's
How much to take?
This depends on how you're getting your cocoa.
If you're eating dark chocolate - use some common sense. Not too much, or you'll be on the toilet for longer than your weekly shop...
If you're drinking it, stick to around 2000-3000mg daily (2g - 3g).
What are Cocoa's active ingredients?
Since cocoa extracts aren't common, we're only looking at cocoa powder. Just make sure it is 100% cocoa powder - no sugar, no nasties.
One notable compound that comes from cocoa is Theobromine. This is a stimulant, that has a light coffee buzz effect - making cocoa a perfect pair for your coffee.
But don't worry about looking for this specifically, since you probably won't find any cocoa that lists the % of Theobromine.
Just rest assured that you are still getting Theobromine in your cocoa powder - even if it doesn't specifically say it on the packet.
Where to purchase?
Being a common baking ingredient, cocoa powder & dark chocolate aren't hard to find. Try these places:
- Your local grocery store (Walmart, Costco, etc)
- Amazon
- Health food retailers
I recommend adding it to your coffee. It tastes great, and helps level out the coffee crash. Consider trying our reFuel Coffee Enhancement Formula - which has cocoa and 8 other functional ingredients for men's performance.
8. MCT Oil

Energy booster & fat burner
Maybe you've heard of this one. Maybe you haven't.
MCT Oil is an extract from coconut oil. They're extracted it to remove a part of the chemical chain - allowing them to be rapidly digested in the gut, and providing some pretty unique health benefits.
First popularized in 2009 by Bulletproof Coffee (a mixture of MCT oil & butter), MCT oil has the ability to boost your energy levels, and aid in weight loss by increasing your base metabolism.
MCT oil is considered a healthy fat, which are essential for proper brain function, and support the production of testosterone - which is particularly important for men in their 40s and beyond.
Healthy fats are undeniably an essential part of a healthy diet, and MCT oil is an easy and effective tool in your wellness toolkit.
Best way to take it
Nowadays, MCT oil comes in many supplement forms: powdered, raw oil, oil capsules, powder capsules, ready made drinks, and more - but they're not made equal.
The best way to take MCT oil is as a raw oil - due to it being the highest bioavailability. But there is one glaring downside... the taste.
From personal experience, I can tell you MCT oil is nasty, and I'm willing to bet you'd agree with me if you tried it.
The taste alone is bad enough, but drinking tablespoons of oil is not something I particularly look forward to every day - which is why I ultimately choose to take it as a powder.
Powder/oil capsules are also an option, but due to their small size, you can't fit much in them. And taking 4+ of these capsules per day starts to hurt the bank account after a while.
In my opinion, powder is the best option. It's the second highest bioavailability, and it's far more convenient. Mix it into a drink, such as your coffee, and it acts as a tasteless creamer of sorts.
If you want to go down this route, I recommend our reFuel coffee enhancement supplement - as it features MCT oil powder as one of its 9 ingredients.
Ultimately, the choice is yours - take it the best way that suits you. But don't pass without trying it first - MCT Oil is another one of those underrated supplements that doesn't get talked about anywhere near as much as it deserves.
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Increase base metabolism
- Aid in fat burn
- Provide fast acting energy
- Support healthy testosterone production
- Support healthy brain function
How much to take?
This is one of those supplements where you can take about as much as you want (within reason).
If you are taking the oil directly, start with one tablespoon per day.
If you're taking it in powdered or capsule form, stick to what the supplement serving size says.
What are MCT oil's active ingredients?
MCT oil isn't standardized to any particular active ingredient.
Note: MCT oil powders generally contain acacia gum to help keep the powder from clumping.
This is nothing to be concerned with, as it's not considered a filler. In fact, many take this ingredient alone as a digestive aid.
Where to purchase?
MCT oil is considered a specialty health item. So may not be stocked at large retailers. Here's where you can find it:
- Health food retailers
- Amazon
- Specialty online retailers
7. Black Maca

Sacred Inca adaptogen
Black Maca, one of my all-time favorites...
Maca comes in three types, red, yellow, and black. It's a class of plants native to Peru, and can only be found thousands of feet above sea level in the Andes mountain range.
Used by Inca warriors, Black Maca is considered the "warrior's maca", and was given to the soldiers of the Inca empire before battle to boost their energy & fighting ability - and even their libido.
Though Inca men were actually banned from taking the plant in everyday life, due to its libido boosting effects being too strong.
Mind & body stress protection
The plant is classified as an "adaptogen" - which is a type of supplement that helps manage stress.
This applies to mental/emotional stress, as well as oxidative stress (which causes cell damage).
Luckily for us, we don't have an Inca emperor micromanaging our lives - so we're free to take Black Maca whenever we please...
Like, every day perhaps? Well, that's exactly what I do!
My experience
Black Maca was actually the first herbal supplement I ever took, all the way back in 2016 (how time flies!). It was right at the start of my bio-hacking journey, and I credit Black Maca with getting me so interested in the supplement space...
It piqued my interest because it actually worked! I started taking it because I was feeling so tired, and was looking for some "foundational energy," not just another caffeine pill.
While the libido boost wasn't as profound to me as the energy, I did still notice a positive difference in the bedroom - it just wasn't as noticable as the energy boost.
In the time since 2016, I've come to learn Black Maca is another one of those supplements where the "whole plant" is the active ingredient - because everything in it is so good for you.
Hormonal balancer
Adaptogens work by supporting your adrenal glands - managing the production of cortisol, your stress hormone. This helps reduce the mental and physical stress on the body.
Black Maca is also thought to stimulate the hypothalamus and pituitary gland - which helps harmonize the endocrine system.
Put simply, it helps keep your hormones balanced, which is especially important for us guys in our 40s, who need to keep our testosterone levels healthy.
So if you're looking for some energy and hormone support, to keep you doing the things you love - I personally recommend Black Maca
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Boost physical performance
- Help level energy levels throughout the day
- Protect against cell damage
- Balance hormone levels (cortisol & testosterone)
- Potentially enhance libido
How much to take?
A standard daily serving is between 1000mg - 2000mg.
You can find Black Maca in capsule and powder formats. The choice is yours.
What are Black Maca's active ingredients?
Black Maca has no "one" active ingredient. The plant is made up of macamides, macaenes, glucosinolates, and polyphenols - all of which are responsible for the benefits.
Don't buy an extract, purchase the plant powder so it includes all of the positive compounds in the plant.
Where to purchase?
Black Maca is rare. As I mentioned, the plant only grows in one place in the world - so it can be very difficult to get a good quality Black Maca supplement.
Poor quality Black Maca supplements use the cheap, low quality plant, which contains fewer beneficial compounds.

6. Rhodiola Rosea

A Viking history
Rhodiola is a beautiful flowering shrub that grows in cold climates such as Europe, Siberia, and North America. Perhaps you have even seen it during a hiking trip.
The plant has a long history of use, with it being well documented in Scandinavian & Russian folklore.
Legend has it that the Vikings used the plant to enhance their physical performance & reduce stress during long voyages and raids.
And that folklore seems to be more than story, with modern research supporting those claims.
Reduce fatigue & stress - while increasing muscle performance
Clinical testing has shown the plant has a positive effect on combating fatigue, reducing stress, increasing muscle strength, improving muscle soreness, and speeding up muscle recovery.
Sounds too good to be true, but these are coming from clinical trials - so it's hard to refute the evidence.
So it sure seems like the Vikings were onto something!
A solid "all-rounder"
Like Black Maca, Rhodiola is classed as an adaptogen - because of the benefits it has in so many different areas.
This is why it is such a powerful supplement for men looking to improve their mind & body in their 40s. Personally, I class this as a "must have".
The combination of mind, body, and mood improvements - backed by such solid clinical evidence has got me convinced I can't live without this stuff...
For men like us, an adaptogenic herb like Rhodiola can be a metaphorical "ace up the sleeve", due to it's ability to enhance almost every area of life.
That's why it's generally the first herb I recommend to friends and family asking for advice about performance supplements. In short, it's a fantastic place to start.
Extra tip for the pros
A very recent 2023 study showed that caffeine & Rhodiola combined, may have the ability to boost strength more than just Rhodiola alone.
So put some thought into taking your Rhodiola alongside your coffee, according to the study - it appears to be the most effective way.
Take your capsule at the same time as a coffee - or opt for our reFuel coffee enhancement, which contains Rhodiola.
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Boost physical performance
- Increase & stabilize energy levels
- Reduce muscle soreness & speed up recovery
- Dramatically reduce stress (cortisol)
- Enhance focus & cognitive ability
How much to take?
Rhodiola is typically found in extracts. Dosages vary wildly depending on strength, and intended use.
A standard daily serving can range between 25mg - 500mg depending on strength.
For example, 50 mg of a 3% salidroside extract is considered a standard effective daily dose.
What are Rhodiola's active ingredients?
Rhodiola has three main chemical compounds: Rosavins, Salidroside, and Tyrosol - with Salidroside being most common active ingredient.
Be sure to check the supplement facts panel, so you know what active ingredient is in your chosen extract product.
Where to purchase?
Despite being very well researched, Rhodiola can still be hard to find. You can find it here:
- Amazon
- Specialty online retailers
- reFuel Coffee Enhancement Formula
5. Ashwagandha

Ayurvedic staple for thousands of years
Ashwagandha is a herb that has gained serious popularity in the last 5 years - with much of the West starting to adopt it for the powerful stress & anxiety reducing benefits it can offer.
But what many don't know, is that its benefits have been well known for quite literally thousands of years in the East. It's actually the most popular Ayurvedic herb in India.
It's main benefit lies in its ability to reduce serum cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for causing stress - which you might remember me mentioning with some of our other adaptogens.
And this isn't just some "wives tale"—recent clinical studies have supported these claims.
Take this 2012 study from the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine as an example.
64 participants with a history of chronic stress took part, with some taking a high strength Ashwagandha extract, and some taking the placebo.
After 8 weeks, the Ashwagandha group reported a significant reduction in stress & anxiety - and this was supported by an average reduction of serum cortisol levels of 27.9%... Wow
With many men dealing with work stress, family responsibilities, or general life pressures - ashwagandha can be a fantastic way to naturally lift some of that tension, and feel more at ease in daily life.
Enhance muscle mass & strength, and boost serum testosterone levels
Clinical testing has also shown some strong evidence that ashwagandha use can dramatically enhance muscle growth and strength, when combined with resistance training.
One study on 57 participants showed the Ashwagandha testing group saw much higher increases in muscle mass, strength, testosterone, and decreases in body fat, when compared to the placebo group.
And this is something that Ayurvedic medicine has known about the plant long before this study was ever conducted.
So in short, ashwagandha is an incredibly powerful herb for mind & body enhancement in men 40 and up. If you've been feeling stressed lately, and your performance in the gym has plateaued - consider taking ashwagandha for a natural boost.
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Increase muscle mass
- Reduce stress & anxiety levels
- Reduce muscle soreness & speed up recovery
- Increase resistance training strength
- Boost blood testosterone levels
How much to take?
Ashwagandha is typically found in extracts - but plant powders aren't uncommon either. Dosages vary wildly depending on strength, and intended use. I recommend extracts over plant powders.
A standard daily serving can range between 300mg - 500mg depending on strength.
For example, 300 mg of a 3% withanolides extract is considered a standard effective daily dose.
What are Ashwagandha's active ingredients?
Ashwagandha's benefits are generally attributed to one compound: withanolides.
A good aswagandha extract should contain at least 3% withanolides.
Where to purchase?
Ashwagandha is still uncommon to see in stores - so purchasing online is your best bet.

- Specialty online retailers

4. L-Theanine

The energy & focus booster
An amino acid found in green tea, L-Theanine has been steadily growing in popularity.
It's on this list, because of its ability to induce relaxation by increasing GABA levels - this is a neurotransmitter essentially responsible for calming you down.
It also helps level out your seratonin & dopamine. This is particularly important for a man in their 40s, because many of us can start experiencing mood swings - due to fluctuations in these hormones.
I call L-Theanine a "rounding supplement" - which is a term I've coined for the type of supplement that has a well rounded effect on your wellness.
They have effects on your cognitive ability, blood pressure, and energy levels - which feed into more direct areas like your work and gym performance.
Coffee crash elimination
The notable thing about L-Theanine (and why I like it so much), is that it has synergistic effects with caffeine - just like Rhodiola. Clinical research has shown it extends the energy from coffee over a longer period of time.
Meaning a longer lasting energy hit, without the crash. I've made a graph to better explain it. See below:

As you can see, caffeine paired with L-Theanine has the ability to level out the energy release - reducing that awful coffee crash.
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Promote relaxation
- Improve mood
- Reduce blood pressure
- Enhance focus & cognitive ability
- Reduce the coffee crash by leveling energy release
How much to take?
L-Theanine is generally taken in dosages between 100mg - 200mg per day.
It is already an extract, so plant powder products are not available.
What are L-Theanine's active ingredients?
L-Theanine is the active ingredient, as it is an amino acid extract from green tea leaves.
Where to purchase?
L-Theanine is a common supplement online, but will be harder to find in-stores:
- Amazon
- Specialty online retailers
- reFuel Coffee Enhancement Formula
3. Lions Mane Mushroom

The ultimate brain health hack
Lions mane is a pretty awesome looking mushroom - named after, you guessed it - a lion's mane.
In recent years, it's started to gain a lot of traction in the supplement community. This is because recent research shows it stimulates the production of a chemical process called NGF (nerve growth factor).
This was a ground breaking discovery, because NGF stimulates the growth and repair of brain cells - which is essential for maintaining a healthy brain.
Stimulation of NGF can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and maintain healthy brain function. Not to mention, NGF stimulus allows your brain to work harder - meaning better focus, memory, and general cognitive enhancement.
These brain boosting & protecting effects are why it's such an effective supplement for men 40 and over.
Out of all the focus supplements you could take - Lions Mane would be my go-to recommendation every time. Not only is it a super effective cognitive booster, it also supports brain vitality.
That's an absolute win-win in my book...
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Fortify brain health (through NGF)
- Dramatically enhance focus
- Boost cognitive function
- Reduce inflamation
How much to take?
Lions Mane is available in extracts and plant powders. Extracts are recommended, as the active ingredients are well known.
Take between 500mg - 1000mg of Lions Mane daily depending on health goals and potency.
What are Lions Mane's active ingredients?
There are an array of Lions Mane active ingredients, but the most common are Beta-D-glucans, and Polysaccharides.
- Polysaccharides (20% to 50%)
- Beta-D-glucans (10% to 35%)
Where to purchase?
Lions Mane is also relatively hard to find, so your best bet is to buy it online:
- Amazon
- Specialty online retailers
- reFuel Coffee Enhancement Formula
2. Black Ginger

The Muay Thai fighters secret weapon
Black Ginger - chances are you haven't heard of it. This is one of those lesser known gems...
It's a Thai plant, traditionally used by Muay Thai fighters to boost training performance - and it works because it's a vasodilator (blood flow booster).
Taking the plant opens up your blood vessels, giving your muscles more fuel (oxygen) - resulting in more strength, and reduced recovery times.
Though the plant isn't just limited to athletic performance - it can give a boost in the bedroom too! Which is why it's gotten the nickname "Thai Viagra" over the years.
It's blood flow boosting effects also work to increase your energy levels - with better circulation resulting in less fatigue, and more energy to get through the day.
This is why, along with Black Maca, it was one of the first supplements I ever took - and it's also why I continue taking it to this very day.
Side effects to watch for
Though the one downside (or potential upside) is that it reduces blood pressure.
When your blood vessels expand (as they do when taking vasodilators), there is an overall decrease of blood pressure. If your blood pressure is already high, or in the normal range - there shouldn't be any issues.
But if you have low blood pressure, this is where you might want to be careful. Start with small doses—say, half of the recommended daily serve - and work your way up.
If you start feeling lightheaded, fatigued, or have blurred vision - you know you're taking too much.
But as I mentioned before, this may only happen if you have low blood pressure as is. If you have high blood pressure, then you will likely benefit from this.
Quick benefit breakdown:
- Boost blood circulation
- Dramatically enhance athletic performance
- Reduce recovery time
- Reduce inflamation
- Enhance libido
- Improve erections through better blood flow
How much to take?
Black Ginger is avaliable in extracts and plant powders. Plant powders are recommended, as the plant is very potent as is, and all the other beneficial compounds in the plant will be present.
Take between 500mg - 1500mg of Black Ginger daily, depending on your health goals and your sensitivity to the plant.
What are Black Ginger's active ingredients?
There are multiple beneficial ingredients in Black Ginger, but the main active ingredient is:
- 5,7-dimethoxyflavone (DMF)
Where to purchase?
Quality black ginger is hard to find. It is most definitely not stocked in any retail stores, and the quality of online products can be unreliable. See some options below:
- Amazon
- Black Powder
1. Cordyceps Mushroom

Nature's Steroid
Cordyceps mushroom - the absolute best supplement men over 40 can be taking (in my opinion).
Now, why do I say this? Because it is the king of athletic performance supplements - it hits athletic enhancement in 3 areas:
- It reduces post-workout soreness - by acting as an anti-inflammatory agent
- It boosts strength - by increasing oxygen saturation in your muscles
- It levels up muscle growth and endurance - by increasing blood flow & nutrient delivery to your muscles
In short, it kicks ass!
Oh, and I should mention - it's an aphrodisiac too. A nice added bonus, if I do say so myself.
Cordyceps Mistaken For Steroids
It first hit headlines in 1993, when the Chinese Olympic running team broke three world records in the San Antonio Olympics. The team did so well that they were accused of using steroids...
Well, as it turns out, they were actually using Cordyceps, not steroids!
So if you haven't figured it out by now, this is some pretty powerful stuff.
So as a man in my 40s, I will take any kind of natural help I can get - and this funny looking mushroom is at the top of my list (quite literally).
The Zombie Mushroom
Cordyceps is also known as the "zombie mushroom". This is because some strains infect their host, essentially sucking their life essence, and feeding off their corpse.
Sounds graphic, I know - but that's because it is... Check out this photo:

But don't worry, before you ask - it can't infect humans. And the cordyceps you take aren't grown out of some unsuspecting insect - they're grown in labratories with strict cleanliness (and ethics!) procedures.
How much to take?
Cordyceps can be found in either plant powders or extracts - with extracts being the better option. Standard serving sizes differ depending on the active ingredient in the product. But let's use the most common, Polysaccharides, as an example:
Take between 500mg - 1200mg daily.
What are Cordyceps' active ingredients?
As mentioned before, there are multiple potential active ingredients that Cordyceps extracts can contain. See some below:
- Polysaccharides (10% - 40%)
- Cordycepin (0.1% - 1%)
- Adenosine (0.1% - 1%)
- Beta-glucans (10% - 30%)
Where to purchase?
Cordyceps isn't overly common, but can still be found sparingly. Purchasing online is your best option. See some options below:
- Amazon
- Specialty health food retailers
- Specialty online stores
